New Year's Eve and Carnival in Rio: a house to enjoy the party, and to rest from it
December 31: midnight on the beach, fireworks over the ocean. February: samba until dawn. And to come home from the party, a house for eight with a pool, facing the Cagarras islands.
New Year's Eve in Copacabana
On December 31, Copacabana beach hosts the world's largest New Year's Eve celebration according to Guinness: more than 5 million people welcomed 2026, most of them dressed in white. Last year the fireworks lasted 12 minutes, launched from 19 barges, with three stages in Copacabana and ten more across the city. The city publishes the 2026-27 program in the weeks before the party.
The night of the 31st, from Vidigal
On a normal day, Copacabana is 18 minutes from the house by taxi. On New Year's Eve the beachfront is closed to traffic and parking is banned as far as Ipanema and Leblon (from December 30 last year). The easiest way: the house's private driver (book him in advance) or a Vidigal taxi drops you as close as possible, and you come back by metro to Leblon, then by taxi.
Or stay at the house: dinner by the pool facing the ocean and the Cagarras islands, away from the crowds, then midnight on Vidigal beach, a 7-minute walk away, in front of the fireworks of the Sheraton Grand Rio, the hotel next to the beach: the show without the Copacabana crowds.
Carnival 2027
Carnival 2027 runs from Saturday, February 6 to Ash Wednesday, February 10. At the Sambódromo, the twelve Grupo Especial samba schools parade over three nights: Sunday 7, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February, four schools a night. Tickets are already on sale.
On the streets, the blocos, brass bands followed by thousands of people, take over Ipanema and Leblon for days. Vidigal is 5 minutes from Leblon by taxi: go out for the party, come back to sleep in peace.

For New Year's Eve and Carnival, bookings often come in three to four months ahead. These are high-season rates, with a minimum stay depending on the dates. Booking direct is at least 8% cheaper than Airbnb: full payment at booking, fully refunded if you cancel up to 60 days before arrival.
