Working remotely from Rio, facing the ocean

A video call in the morning, the beach at noon, a swim in the pool after the last meeting. What the house offers to those who work during their stay, and what to know about the hours.

The connection

The house is on fibre, with Wi-Fi that reaches 250 Mb/s in the living room and covers the whole house, garden included. Several people can be on video calls at the same time. In the event of a power cut, rare in the neighbourhood, 4G and 5G mobile coverage is good in Vidigal: tethering from a phone fills the gap.

Where to set up

Two real desks: in the sea-view suite upstairs, facing the ocean and the Cagarras islands, to work while watching the boats go by; and in the separate studio off the patio, quiet, for whoever has back-to-back calls. The 100 m² living room, with its big table for eight and glass walls open to the sea, seats a whole team. The bedrooms are air-conditioned, the living room fan-cooled.

The time zone

Rio is one hour ahead of New York in winter and two hours ahead in summer (Brazil no longer has daylight saving time), and three hours behind London in winter, four in summer. A US East Coast day that starts at 9 am starts at 10 or 11 am in Rio; a London day that starts at 9 am starts at 5 or 6 am in Rio, which leaves the afternoon free for the beach. For Buenos Aires and Santiago, the difference is zero or one hour.

Around the desk

Breakfast can be served at the house. Cafés, grocery stores and a gym are a 5-minute walk away, the Zona Sul supermarket delivers, and Vidigal beach is a 7-minute walk for the lunch break. One hour of housekeeping every weekday is included, and the welcome team can be reached throughout your stay. For a long stay, the price is for the whole house: $600 a night (about €535).
