Is Vidigal safe for tourists?

Yes, and it's not an owner saying so: it's Cariocas and our guests. Here is what you need to know, straight, before booking a house in Vidigal.

What Cariocas say

Rio's residents call Vidigal "Rio's safe". A single street goes in and out, from the square on Avenida Niemeyer, with a police presence at the entrance since the 2011 pacification. The neighbourhood lives like a village: everyone knows everyone, and the community has set its own rules, which residents enforce. Many of its 13,000 residents work in the hotels, restaurants and taxis of Leblon and Ipanema. Rents have long been higher here than on Rio's other hills: Vidigal has become an address.

Who comes to Vidigal

David Beckham bought a house here in 2014, for the view. The artist Vik Muniz built his studio and his school here. The Nós do Morro theatre, founded here in 1986, trained the actors of City of God. The Sheraton Grand Rio occupies the bottom of the hill, with its beach. On weekends, Cariocas come up to Bar da Laje and Mirante do Arvrão for the sunset, and the Dois Irmãos trail, which starts at the top of the neighbourhood, is one of the most popular hikes in the city.

What our guests experience

Vila Oriba's owner has known Rio for more than ten years; he lived in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon before buying his house in Vidigal in 2023. He walks up and down every day, as do his 77-year-old parents, and feels more at ease here than down there. He has never seen an assault here, and neither have his guests. Their reviews say it better:

  • "The people around the area were friendly, and we felt safe and comfortable throughout our stay." Ramon, New York, May 2026
  • "One of the best homes I've ever stayed in. Beautiful, clean and very safe." Brandon, April 2026
  • "When we realised the house was at the bottom of the Vidigal favela, we weren't very reassured… and in the end it was a great experience! Contrary to popular belief it's ultra safe, much safer for tourists than Copacabana or Ipanema." Marianne, August 2025, translated from French
  • "An incredible house right in Vidigal. Incredible sea view! Modern house, safe neighbourhood!" Yassine, May 2025, translated from French

Where the house is, and how you get in

Vila Oriba is at the entrance of the neighbourhood, at the bottom of the hill, on the road to Leblon, a six-minute walk from the square where Uber, 99 and taxis stop. Not at the top. A caretaker couple lives on site in a separate apartment, and the welcome team can be reached throughout your stay. At night, as everywhere in Rio, you come home by taxi: the neighbourhood's taxis, reachable on a WhatsApp group, drive up to the door, and the house's private driver can be booked for evenings and transfers.

The real things to watch for

Let's be frank about what deserves it. Some Uber drivers decline to drive into the neighbourhood: you get dropped at the square, or call a Vidigal taxi. The climb to the house is on foot, uphill, six minutes: with a pushchair or heavy suitcases, a neighbourhood taxi gets you up in a minute. And on December 31, all of Brazil celebrates, Vidigal included. For the rest, the precautions are those of any big city: don't leave your phone on a bar table, take a taxi home at night.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vidigal a favela?

Yes, Vidigal is a community that grew on the Dois Irmãos hill, between Leblon and São Conrado. Pacified in 2011, it is now one of the most sought-after addresses on Rio's hills, visited by Cariocas for its bars, its view and the Dois Irmãos trail.

Can you walk in Vidigal at night?

By day, yes, without reservation. At night, as everywhere in Rio, you take a taxi to the house: the neighbourhood's taxis drive up to the door.

Do Ubers drive up to the house?

Not always. Uber and 99 drop you at Vidigal square, a six-minute walk away. The community taxis, reachable on a WhatsApp group, and the house's private driver drive up to the door.

Is there someone on site?

Yes: a caretaker couple lives in a separate apartment on the property, and the welcome team can be reached throughout your stay, in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
